Rene Lemay was born in Montreal in 1934. He is a self-taught artist. Early in his career, he gained recognition in the Quebec art scene by publishing his paintings in limited edition prints. Today, one can find his original works permanently exhibited in art galleries throughout Canada, the United States and Europe.

The paintings of Rene Lemay which we observe represent horses, dancers, musicians - all possessing one common denominator: movement. It is essentially the primary element in Rene Lemays work - a tool which allows him to create his highly stylized, elongated and sensual forms.

The artist applies the acrylic paint on the canvas as if it were watercolour. On one hand, the transparency of this technique permits him to merge masses of colour on top of one another, and on the other hand, it allows him to outline and define his subjects with a black marker, confirming each linear movement. "Quite often my paintings explode . . this appears when you least expect it."

But that which may resemble the fusion science of composition is in fact the integrated knowledge and the long-ago acquired laws of harmony. We now understand when the artist talks about "precision", "the rules of physics from which one cannot transgress", and "the technical qualities which are necessary to mention when discussing the value of a work of art".

Rene Lemay's talent is natural. We can predict that his success will continue . . naturally!
