Terry McLaughlin was born in the Royal Burgh of Rutherglen on the west coast of Scotland. He completed his high school education and went on to a career in the British Royal Navy. He then completed a five-year apprenticeship in electrical and ordnance
engineering.
Married to Anne in 1972 and, still in love with each other, they immigrated to Canada in 1978 where they set up their home in Calgary Alberta. While admiring some sculptures in a gallery in Calgary, Terry commented to Anne that he
felt he could “do that”. This comment was repeated on several occasions till one day his wise best friend Anne arrived home and handed Terry a slab of clay and said, “do it”. This is how the journey to sculpture began.
While raising two
children, Kevin and Patrick, and working in various fields from field engineering to his current position as a sales manager in pharmaceuticals, Terry sculpted in various media including clay, bronze and wood. Terry has always felt drawn to the arts and
has worked in oil, watercolour and pen and ink. Having discovered the magic of stone Terry, a self taught artist, has settled in this medium, feeling connected to and best able to express his talent revealing the heart of the stone.
As a new
artist in this medium, Terry is making exceptional progress and has a great future in this field.
