Donnie Bird was born into the Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. As a child, he watched his father work with wood carvings, and since then he has had a special love for native art. He takes great pride in his work.
Donnie move to British Columbia
nine years ago and was fascinated by the beauty of soapstone carvings. He was particularly inspired by the work of George Wesley (Ommeusoo). Since that time, Donnie has been carving for several years, working primarily in Brazilian, Italian and
Beaverhead soapstone, as well as Wonderstone and Alabaster.
He loves to create carvings of bears, eagles and other sacred animals. He is now passing the gift of carving to his son, to carry on the tradition he has cherished for many years.
