RODNEY "AMAGAK" KOLAUSOK

Rodney is a talented young artist from Inuvik, Northwest Territories in the Mackenzie River Delta Region, born in 1970. When his mother died in 1980, his natural father was unable to care for his 11 children. Rodney was adopted by Polish missionairies. He moved to Vancouver in 1995 to further his carving skills.

He has learned his art from Bill Nasogaluak and his brother Joe (Tuktoguktuk), and the famous carver Mallie from the Eastern Arctic. He also learned from Cape Dorset artist TT Curly (Cape Dorset).

Rod says he carves because God gave him the talent and he also has been saved by his art. Carving helps him escape the harsh reality of his early native lifestyle. He disciplines his mind while working.

He is fascinated with native legends and stories and he will regale the avid listener with countless tales. He is a storyteller in stone. He wants to make people laugh or cry with his carvings. Rod is a versatile carver who loves to create bears, wolves, owls and shamanic figures.
